Mariama Jobarteh: The Journey Toward Healing and accountability in The Gambia.
In this video, Mariama Jobarteh from Fantanka, a local GIJTR partner in The Gambia, sheds light on the Truth and Reconciliation process that has been unfolding in the country after the Yahya Jammeh regime. Yahya Jammeh's rule, which lasted from 1994 to 2017, was marked by severe human rights abuses, including torture, extrajudicial killings, and political repression. The transition to a more democratic and just society has required a deep and honest look into these dark chapters.
Mariama explains why it’s crucial to hear directly from victims of these abuses and to create safe spaces where they can share their experiences without fear.

FANTANKA is a pioneering, women-led civil society organization based in The Gambia, dedicated to advocating for gender equality, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) rights, and the rights of marginalized groups. We are passionate about creating a society where every individual—regardless of gender, background, or ability—can thrive and enjoy their fundamental rights.

We focus on empowering those often left behind, including out-of-school youth and individuals with disabilities. We recognize that the path to true equality is fraught with challenges. Social, religious, and cultural norms often perpetuate discrimination and marginalization.
