FANTANKA Stands Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in The Gambia
Recently, participants in our workshops have raised critical discussions surrounding the alarming issue of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). They emphasized the urgent need for legal reforms and accountability in addressing these pervasive injustices. As one participant poignantly stated, “Survivors bear the scars while perpetrators walk free. Women deserve better.”
The dangers and impacts of SGBV are profound and far-reaching. Beyond the immediate physical and emotional harm inflicted on survivors, SGBV perpetuates a cycle of fear and silence within communities. It undermines the fundamental rights of women and girls, stifling their potential and contributing to systemic inequalities. The social stigma attached to survivors often leads to further marginalization, preventing them from seeking justice and healing.
FANTANKA is deeply committed to ending this harmful practice in The Gambia. We recognize that to create meaningful change, we must advocate for comprehensive legal reforms that ensure justice for survivors and hold perpetrators accountable. This includes pushing for laws that address the specific needs of victims and promote a culture of respect and equality.
Moreover, we believe in the power of community education and awareness-raising to challenge the harmful norms and attitudes that perpetuate SGBV. By engaging community members, leaders, and youth, we aim to foster a culture of zero tolerance towards violence and to empower individuals to stand up against injustice.
Together, we can work towards a future where all individuals, regardless of gender, can live free from violence and discrimination. FANTANKA stands firmly in solidarity with survivors, advocating for their rights and amplifying their voices in the fight against SGBV. It is time for our society to come together to demand accountability and to create a safer, more equitable environment for everyone.
